Make Any Plate Look Instantly More Impressive
Artistically plated lunch with salmon, avocado and boiled eggs.

Hello Food Lovers,

You know how some dishes just look special - even when the ingredients are really simple?

This week I wanted to share a few quick plating ideas you can use to turn everyday meals into something that feels fresh, intentional, and a little bit like it's come out of a restaurant kitchen.

These aren't complicated techniques. In fact, each of them takes less than a minute, and they make a surprising difference to the final look of your plate.

Below are a few of my favourite techniques shown when re-plating this simple lunch:

Use Height to Add Instant Interest

A small twist, fold, or layer gives the eye something to focus on. Think of it like arranging flowers - a little structure creates a lot of impact.

e.g. As shown in the photos - A small stack of toast fingers, a layered pile of salmon, or even a simple mound of greens adds shape and intention.

Slice With Purpose (It Changes Everything)

The way you cut something completely changes how it looks on the plate. A few thin slices of avocado fanned out looks instantly elegant. If you keep the spacing even, the whole dish looks organised instead of being thrown together.

Use Odd Numbers

Odd numbers of quantities (e.g. 3 slices, 5 dots, 3 clusters) have been proven to look better. It creates natural balance without looking too perfect.

This is a plating secret used everywhere from cafes to fine dining. Once you know this trick, you'll start seeing it everywhere.

Add One Mini Detail

Just one mini detail is enough to make the whole plate look more thoughtful. A swirl of sauce, a tiny sprinkle of herbs, a wedge of lemon, or a few capers or microgreens, etc.

Be careful to not overload the garnishes - just add one deliberate touch. These simple plating tricks can take your food from okay, to 'wow!'

Here's a link to an older video - Turn a Simple Lunch into a Stunning Plate in Minutes - where you can see these ideas in action.

If you give these little plating ideas a try, send a photo - I love seeing your creations!

Happy cooking,
Taryn
