5 Tips For Planning A Canapé Menu
Canapé menu planning.

Whether you're planning an afternoon tea, a birthday celebration, or simply inviting friends over for a casual catch-up, choosing the menu can often feel like the hardest part. It's easy to end up with too many of one thing, not enough variety, or far more food than you actually need!

Five simple canapé menu tips

Here are five simple things I keep in mind when planning a canapé menu.

Choose items that can be prepared ahead

The best hosts spend time with their guests, not in the kitchen. Whenever possible, choose recipes that can be made or partially prepared in advance, leaving only heating or final assembly for the day.

Here are some ideas:

  • Bruschetta and crostini (base and topping pre-prepared, assemble on the day)
  • Fruit or antipasto skewers (prepared the day before, assembled a few hours before)
  • Mini savoury pastries (made ahead and reheated to serve)
  • Cocktail sandwiches (made ahead and cut a few hours before)
  • Petite desserts can often be completely ready ahead of time

Balance the flavours

Try to choose a combination of flavours for your menu. Some mild, savoury, fresh, and rich options. Not every item needs to be bold, but together they should offer something for everyone.

Here are some ideas:

  • Savoury options: Sausage rolls, savoury mini muffins, spanakopita triangles
  • Fresh options: Crudités, rice paper rolls, watermelon and feta skewers, caprese skewers, sandwiches
  • Rich options: Smoked salmon blinis, mini tartlets, baked brie

Keep the presentation simple, but thoughtful

You don't need elaborate garnishes or expensive serving ware. Group similar foods together, vary the heights where possible, and leave a little space between items so everything looks inviting.

Here are some ideas:

  • Fruit platters
  • Bread and dips platters
  • Antipasto platters

Think about the colours of your choices

A colourful spread is instantly more inviting. Fresh herbs, vibrant vegetables and different breads can add plenty of visual interest without making the menu more complicated.

Here are some ideas:

  • Fresh fruit can add colour to any table
  • Beetroot dip, or roast capsicum dip can add vibrant colours
  • Use edible flowers to garnish

Include a variety of textures

A table full of soft foods can feel surprisingly repetitive. Try to include a mix of crisp, creamy, and crunchy items to keep every bite interesting.

Here are some ideas:

  • Crunchy options: Vegetable sticks and hummus/dips, parmesan crisps
  • Creamy options: Whipped feta crostini, smoked salmon mousse, sweet treats
  • Crisp options: Vegetable chips, wonton cups

One of my favourite things about canapés is that simple ingredients can look incredibly elegant with just a little attention to presentation. Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

I'd love to know - what is the one canapé that always disappears first when you entertain?

Happy cooking,
Taryn
