Pinwheel Sandwiches
Hello Food Lovers!
Pinwheel sandwiches are colourful, fun and perfect for entertaining! With the Christmas and New Year festivities behind us, it's time to start thinking about lunchboxes again! If you're looking for a way to make sandwiches feel a little more special, pinwheels are one of the simplest options. They're perfect for lunchboxes, parties, picnics, grazing platters - anything that calls for easy finger food with a bit of flair.
Today I'm sharing two delicious flavour ideas along with some practical tips to make your pinwheels roll neatly, slice cleanly and look gorgeous on the plate.
Start with the Basics
Pinwheel sandwiches may look fancy, but they start with everyday sandwich bread!
- Use a mix of bread colours for a visually appealing platter. You can use white, brown, multigrain etc.
- Trim off the crusts for cleaner edges (or leave them on for in lunchboxes)
- Roll the bread flat with a rolling pin. This compresses it and makes it easier to roll into a pinwheel.
Don't forget a thin spread of cream cheese, hummus, mayonnaise or butter as a moisture barrier. This stops the bread from going soggy and helps bind everything together.
Flavour Ideas
- Cream cheese, date, ginger and apricot - a sweet, fragrant option that always surprises people.
- Chop all the fillings finely so they don't create awkward bumps or break the bread as you roll it.
- Mix them all together.
- Add a sprinkle of fresh parsley to give a beautiful pop of green when the pinwheels are sliced.
- Chicken and cranberry - bright and delicious. A great crowd pleaser.
- Mix shredded chicken with a bit of mayonnaise to bind it all together.
- Add dried cranberries and chopped fresh herbs.
Roll and Cut Perfect Pinwheels
- Roll as tightly as you can without tearing the bread.
- If you're preparing these ahead of time, wrap them tightly and refrigerate until you're ready to cut and plate.
- Use a small serrated paring knife with a gentle sawing motion to create clean slices.
- Wipe your knife between cuts to prevent residue from going on the next slice.
Serving Ideas
- Slightly overlap the slices on a plate for a neat, flowing look.
- Keep each flavour grouped together for a tidy presentation.
- Turn the end pieces so the cut side faces upwards for visual interest.

You can also cut them a bit thicker, pop in a decorative skewer, and stand them upright. A cherry tomato on the skewer looks especially cute.
